Exciting BFC developments You may or may not have heard about certain very exciting changes taking place round here over the next few months. Firstly, The Community Farm … Phil moved the growing operation to the current site just outside Chew Magna a couple of years ago, to bigger acreage and better soil, and at last found himself in a position to start acting on a long held plan – to create a community supported agriculture scheme and make some head way into securing our food sources for the future. Quite a long time down the line, he, the landlord Luke Hasell and an amazingly visionary and dedicated steering group are really seeing the fruits of their labour, as the land becomes The Community Farm, run largely by volunteers, but based on a good, self-supporting Industrial Providence Society business model. There’s a lot to it, so if you’re interested in getting involved (as an individual, group or organisation), or want to find out more, have a look at www.thecommunityfarm.co.uk. For volunteer information, email Clare Groom, our Volunteer Organiser at thecommunityfarm.info@gmail.com. Email me for general information (lucy@betterfood.co.uk) and I’ll pass your enquiry on to the relevant person. We’ve had some volunteer days already, where Phil and the rest of the team get the opportunity to explain and explore in further detail. Lots of fun and a truly important project. Secondly, BFC come to Clifton Oh yes, dear foodies, may Whiteladies Road be to food and wine what Carnaby Street is to fashion (am I showing my age?). The new store, due to open this Autumn, will be culinary paradise, with a real emphasis, as in St Werburghs, on local sourcing and impeccable provenance. We’re currently working with some 65 local producers and farmers, who between them supply us with hundreds of different products, and the more the merrier, we say… We’re busy recruiting now. If you’re interested, or know someone who might be, have a look at our Current Vacancies page. Hurray for St Werburghs! We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved in St Werbs, and life here WILL CARRY ON, of course, with the ever-present enthusiasm you’ve come to expect. The team has set the standards high, and, well, hats off really … onwards and upwards I say … Lucy Gatward Lucy does various marketing activities for BFC
THE BETTER FOOD SHOP, ST WERBURGHS Summer shop promotions and generally good things:

Gardening equipment from Burgeon and Ball, organic and peat free composts and feeds, Suffolk Herb organic seeds. Wildlife in your Garden goodies - from butterfly nectar to books on bee keeping and garden insect identification charts. Delicious Hobbs House and Herbert Bakery bread, and eggs from Winford in North Somerset. Our fresh organic fruit and veg - even at t his time of year, you'll be surprised what we have that's British - not the pineapples, obviously ...
Local Charity: Bristol Community Cake Book from One25 We’ve just taken stock of this book of lovely cake recipes, put together to raise money for One25. Priced at £4.99, all the money goes straight on to them, so as well as owning a really beautifully produced book, you’re contributing directly into their coffers as well. One25 is a very local charity (based in St Paul’s) whose work involves reaching out to women trapped in street sex work, supporting them to break free and build new lives away from violence, poverty and addiction. For more information, see www.one25.org.uk.
