SEPTEMBER 2009

MelAutumn is upon us - did you notice the summer?

Though the Met Office predicts a milder, wetter winter than last year, it's still a time we should all be suring ourselves up health-wise, so we're in the best possible condition to fight the germs that will inevitably come our way.

Eating seasonal food is a great way to do this from a nutritional point of view - the idea being that indiginous local and seasonal food supplies us with what our bodies need to face the various nasties that lurk in our local areas. It's also fresh, having not travelled as far, and in these cash-strapped times supports our local economies.

Our new growing land in Chew Magna is fit to burst at the moment, and if you saw us at the Organic Food Festival at the beginning of September, you'll have seen what an amazing array of colour and flavour we have for you.

We also have some more great tips from nutritional therapist Jamie Richards, and some recipes as well.

AUGUST 2009

lucyWell, we're off to a great start on our mission to discover what optimum health feels like. Our launch last month gave us some great tips and direction from Phil, Jamie and Alex, recipe sheets flew out the door and much discussion about the benefits of raw food ensued.

On to August: Midsummer (!). Jamie's nutrition tips continue to be practical, non-mysterious and informative. Vegetables from our field continue to be as vibrant and beautiful as ever - now in full production, the field is bursting with colour and vitality.

Here's to continued optimum health and a germ free winter!

JULY 2009

Jamie runningWelcome to The Better Food Company's guide to Better Health, in mind, body and spirit.
By Jamie Richards, nutritional therapist and keen runner!

Nutritional expert Patrick Holford asks ‘how would you feel if you woke up in optimum health’?

This question has stayed with me over the past 2 years as I work on my own health and fitness while advising others on theirs. I have altered it somewhat over time and now ask myself ‘is there a difference between the absence of illness and the presence of optimum health’?

So many of us go through life feeling ‘ok’ or ‘fine’, forgetting what it feels like to wake up feeling refreshed, have boundless energy and to remain alert and attentive throughout the day. We drink coffee to perk ourselves up and wine to wind ourselves down. Sugar makes up a huge amount of our diet and we are bombarded with questionable advertising offering us processed ‘health’ junk.

At The Better Food Company we are in a unique position to reach out to our community in a positive, simple way, using some of the amazing resources that are available to us.

The Better Health campaign runs for the next three months. Each month we’ll issue simple and sound advice on improving your mind, body and spirit. These suggestions are designed to be simple and fun, while collectively helping you to feel much better than ok and fine. The contributors are all experts in their field and have contributed freely; other companies have got involved with sponsorship, and offers of discounts to use their facilities.

Please take advantage of the information available and join us on Thursday 9th July to celebrate the launch and make this a fit and healthy summer.
