Our company history

St Werb's store, 2003

The Better Food Company was established by Phil Haughton in 1992 as an organic delivery service, operating from a warehouse in St Werburghs.

In 1998 The Better Food Company became a limited company.

In 2003 it moved to its current location in the Proving House, and became a more conventional retail outlet, still committed to its organic and local principals.

Since 2004 The Better Food Company has also sold fresh produce grown on a 24 acre site 8 miles from Bristol in Chew Magna, originally managed by the company and now managed by/in collaboration with The Community Farm, a not-for-profit community organisation founded by, among others, Phil Haughton, The Better Food Company’s MD. The Community Farm is an enterprise aiming to put people back in touch with the land. They have now also taken on the Better Food Company’s wholesale business and veg box scheme.

In 2006, the shop extended in fill the entire ground floor area of the Proving House, increased its product range and opened the café.

In October 2010, The Better Food Company opened a second store. Supplying a very different clientele, the Clifton-based food hall and deli remains true to the company’s local, organic and ethical principles with the aim of extending the number of people in the city who have access to organic food.
